DEEN’
The glass door of the Mayer’sche Wunderkammer with its words, in the light

Wunderkammer · opened 2018

The
Wunderkammer

“Glass, stone, light,
not forgetting the shadow
nor the dreams behind it.”

The words on the door, in English. Oneiros, from the Greek: a dream vision.

IThe Room

“Objects of art, of desire, of light and of shadow, of the fragile transparency of glass and the cold hardness of stone.”

Our family manufactory is craftsmanship lived, and at the same time a little of a museum: sediments of the history of glass art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Gothic fragments, the Pre-Raphaelite nineteenth century, Art Nouveau, the 1930s, German post-war art and the here and now with our Mayer of Munich artists live side by side in an inspiring coexistence: visible in the light, or resting patiently in the shadow, ready to be discovered again.

The radical virtuosity of a Karl Knappe, in stone as in glass, the mischievous playfulness of Josef Oberberger, the spare clarity of Bernward Mayer, a son of the house: all of this is there to be marvelled at, or recognised, in the Mayer’sche Wunderkammer.

“What is foreign to one another heightens one another’s effect.”
